awards shmawards.

Jackson turned nine, and I still have to get my post finished for his big birthday...

But today my adorable boy came home from school with tears because there was an awards ceremony at school during the day, and the kids that didn't get awards stayed in the classroom, while the teacher and the "award kids" went to the lunchroom for the ceremony with their parents... Jackson wasn't invited. I didn't even know it was happening or I would have taken him to lunch during the whole thing.

I'm not saying I am against award ceremony's and awarding excellence, Taylor will probably be getting a bunch at hers in a couple days, but what about everyone else??

It broke my heart to hear him say, "I'm not smart, I never get awards, my teacher's never like me, I can't get straight A's, I think I am really nice... could I get a nice kid award?"..... Seriously, ripped my heart in two.

So here is his award, that will be going in his lunch tomorrow with a candy trophy, and I hope he shows it to everyone with pride. Jackson is an amazing kid with an amazing ability to love and create, and just you watch.... he's gonna invent something that will blow your minds one day.

Jennie, I have been meaning to tell you how cute Jackson was at Cru's birthday party. After the pinata he was so kind and come over to Cohen and Andi and offered his candy to them. I was so impressed at how willing he was to share his candy with them! Seriously, what 9 year old boy would share his candy!! Kate even came over and he shared with her. He is darling and please tell him I think he is wonderful too

That is really sweet Jennie. You should talk to the powers that be about changing how they award kids... at such a young age it seems like it should be based on particpation, (ie everyone can win if they want to reading/volunteer program etc..) not a teachers choice award.. something for me to look forward to in like 5 years i guess. ; )

Oh Jennie. That left me with some tears too. I agree with previous poster that you should tell the school not to do that anymore. Totally not right--and the Boy's Adrift author would not approve of that at all right? Love your award--you are a great momma.

Jennie, I think you should get the "Best Mom Ever Award" ! He's going to love opening his lunch box in front of the other kids and showing off his award. You should be so proud :o)

I cannot believe they are doing an award ceremony that excludes other kids at SCHOOL! That is awful! I would have been heart broken for him. But good thing he has a nice mom like you to remind him why he's special.

Break's my heart, too. It's a nice perk with homeschooling not to have to deal with all the competition/award stuff, but occasionally it'll creep out in church or even between the kids' friends and I have to remind them that their worthiness is not reliant on external validation, but from God. Tell Jackson that we think he's top notch, too! can't wait to see you soon!

Dont you think it would have been better to let him know awards arent everything. I cant believe someone said basically.."Well they should change the award criteria because your son didnt get one. One poster wrote..cant believe they give out awards at school and not give everyone an award!! I know...let's give everyone a's..then no one will get their feelings hurts:-( He is old enough to understand not all get awards. I guess I am the only one who believes we have to let our children learn to accept disapointment and relish accomplishments:-)
